Women reservation: A
Boon or Bane
“The story of women’s struggle for
equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the
collective efforts of all who care about
human rights”- Gloria Steinem.
Ever since creation, women, have been the
victim of all misfortunes. Our society from the age old days has been a male
dominated one. Women have suffered enough from the rituals and ordeals like
sati, dowry, infanticide and many. The position and status of women have
changed in the new scenario; today women are no less than men. They have in all
respects earned them the name, “super human.” These sprouting changes still is
failing to get them the taste of power. Power is reserved to an area of people
or a society; patriarchal or the male dominated sections. Abraham Lincoln, the greatest President of
America, who saved the nation from clutches of slavery, said thus:
“To
know the character of a person give him power.”
Women
should be given power equal to men to foster a better tomorrow. Reservation is
like the highlighted agenda of any political party these days. Women
reservation has always been a topic of debate. In 1993 constitutional amendment
was passed for a random one third of village council leader or Pradhan
positions, in Grama Panchayat to be reserved for women. This enabled women to
display their capacities and capabilities. The successful implementation of the
constitutional amendment paved the way for women reservation bill that proposes
to amend the constitution of India to reserve 33% of all seats in the lower
house of parliament. Rajya Sabha passed the bill on March 2010; the Lok Sabha
has not yet voted the bill. This a strong evidence to prove the inequality or
under reservation; the women is undergoing in the society.
On the brighter side providing reservation
to women means to make them equally strong like men. Even though the country is
developing in almost all fields, the ratio of women when compared to men is
feeble and pathetic. Reservation can promote more and more women to limelight
and provide them with a better economic, social, political and personal life.
Country is getting advanced in all levels and there is in need for a
proportionate rate of effort from the part of the men and women to create a
better balance. Women become more confident and secure when they are given
power or reservation to cater their problems.
Reservation in a sense is not going to
provide women the ease of equality but could arise a feeling of inferiority in
women because even if they are granted 33% they are made the marginalized section
by denying 50% of rights. Reservation for women will be a positive move from
the part of society; which would enable them to unleash and unveil their talent
and open before gates of opportunities. Thus she could gather the power of mind
to destroy all locks, all gates and all bolts that is set upon her freedom.
Let
the words of Brigham Young speak volumes:
“You educate a
man: You educate a man
You educate a
woman; you educate a generation.”
Women ever since been the creator of
anything and everything are deprived of her standards, her confidence, her
freedom, her voice, her valour to describe in a word of everything. Now it’s
time for a change; a change that must come in the name of reservation which
could restore her with freedom, confidence, value, voice, standard and far of
them all respect. It’s hard time for the
society to remove their clutches and let her be free; free to do what she wanted;
what she longed for and make this world a better place for her too to survive
and live.
In
the words of D.H.Lawrence:
“A
woman has to live her life or live to repent not having lived it.” No women
should be left to repent for not having lived her life, each and every one
should be made proud that she has lived her life. Reservation for women should
be a mission to foster equal rights for men and women which could lead to the
vision of a bright future. Reservation should be like the one in which both male
and female could proportionately and equally benefit to the welfare and
development of the country.
