Good Books are Good Friends...

"Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it. To be a genius it takes one percent inspiration and ninety percent perspiration."

In our different stages of life we rendezvous with people having several characters. But not all will we remember, or not all will be able to make a place in our heart. Those who are able to make a place in our heart are our friends. They are the one's with super normal powers, in a sense that they are able to take us to a world of relief when we are poignant.

But true friendship seems to be getting rare in this world. This doesn't mean that all friends are false. But instead of becoming an act of passing clouds, it is increasingly becoming an act of selfishness. Money attracts friends. The richer a man the more friends he has. But true friendship is of different nature. It is lasting and changed circumstances will have no impact on it.Money has no place in it. A true friend is always ready to make sacrifices for his/her friends.

Today in this contemporary world, friendship is a trap in which innocent people are made to fall into an awful cunning game. The poor person who is a good friend discovers only the good in the 'fox-eyed' and loves him more than he has to himself. But what he gains for his honesty is just painful memories in the place of fruitful ones.

But in this big journey of life, we will have to  cross a lot of hurdles, friends are part of our life, but the knowledge that books provide is everlasting. Books are the beings who are unknown of cheating. They are the source of knowledge. A good book is worthier that hundred friends.
"Friends are the image brokers, future predictors and after all a turning point in everyone's life."
If its not true,
"Its always better to be alone,
than to be made alone."

FRIENDSHIP

"Friends are like passing clouds."
Friendship is a blessing. Every man is special. But to have a true friend is a special thing. He/she who has a  true friend is gifted. A man without a friend is like a pond without water. True friends are very rare but a true friend is worthier than thousand friends. A true friend is one who shares his friends happiness and sorrows with equal eyes.

Friendship is an ocean. It never ends. It search's for new boundaries. Life is a journey and friends are various temples that we meet in between. The journey never ends it continues in search of new temples...
"friendship is a treasure that continues till death."

Life that never Ends

Like a dream that withered away,
Like a bubble that burst away,
Like a flower that bloomed away,
Like a winter without snow,
You went miles and miles away.

Trees bear fruits in a sign of hope,
Life lost all the hope when,
the wind snatched them.
With the broken hope of a new life,
You went miles and miles away.

Long away the silver mountain,
that lie on a blue carpet,
to another world,
You went miles and miles away
Leaving me miles and miles away...

The greatest reality of LIFE...

He follows her in a beautiful chariot,
with drooping eyes to carry his beloved,
Not a day passes without the expression of
any malice couples with a tinge of
anger, hatred, arrogance and those everything
that completes the list, with the exception of
love to charioteer himself.

Opportunities are hard to come all too,
But often he patiently awaits the outcome positively.
Everytime a trouble erupts in,
He tends to remain in expectation,
Hoping that the much awaited day,
would come anytime to fulfill his dreams.

She knows him, could experience the
sensation, a much awaited feeling but,
consciously not inclined to go with him.
But although a sudden she got carried away,
by his whims and fancies.

Eventually, a day came when she bid,
farewell to this world, giving endless
sorrows and memories to her beloved
to enjoy the everlasting,
bliss of heaven...
She followed him to a world
quite alien to her...

The Best Day of My Life...

It was the best day of my life. I wish if it could come back again. But, no it cannot happen because that’s why it’s called the best day of my life and past is either buried under your heart or cherished in your memories.  But when can a day be called the best? Is it not when the memories of the day haunt your mind forever?

Then was it not when I was born on Earth? I saw this beautiful Earth, the most wonderful creation of God or was it when I saw my parents? Who lives and cares for me. It can be when I first spoke, when I understood the divine power of words. But that one question which always ponders my mind is, “Why was I born?” Is it not without a purpose that, each and every one of us is born in this beautiful Earth? Each day of our life is thus, a striving to find that something with which we are born, to fulfill the purpose.

The best day of my life will be a day when I will be bathed by the morning sun, which wakes me up from my divine sleep. As I wake up, I would like to do all those things which, I wish to do in my life. I would live like its the last day of my life. I would like to play all my favourite games. I would like to read my favourite books. I would like to eat all the chocolates. I would like to visit all the places in this wondrous world. But, are these all not things which, I always do?

What can I do to make the day special?  Is it not all about doing that one thing, which could change the life of a person for good or bringing a smile on someone's face. I would like to do at least that one small thing possible. If I can make a change, If I could help the poor, If I could fill the stomach of a hungry man, If I could do something to bring a smile on the face of a distressed person; I feel its the best day and the best thing I have done and I will feel blessed.

Instead of thinking or waiting for that day why can't one strive to make each day the best by taking the best out of it because everyday we are heading towards creating our best day. In between some days can be bitter but, even those days leave us with a world of experience, which helps us to be better architects of our best day. It is not like how better you create but its all about how better it is cherished by those for whom you create because creator is appreciated only for his creation. Thus, each day is a better day because better days lead you to the best day. Change your days to better days and the change will lead you towards your best day!

Everyday is best in its own way,
Its all about how you take the best from that day!

Women Reservation : A Boon or Bane

Women reservation: A Boon or Bane

“The story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all  who care about human rights”- Gloria Steinem.
Ever since creation, women, have been the victim of all misfortunes. Our society from the age old days has been a male dominated one. Women have suffered enough from the rituals and ordeals like sati, dowry, infanticide and many. The position and status of women have changed in the new scenario; today women are no less than men. They have in all respects earned them the name, “super human.” These sprouting changes still is failing to get them the taste of power. Power is reserved to an area of people or a society; patriarchal or the male dominated sections.  Abraham Lincoln, the greatest President of America, who saved the nation from clutches of slavery, said thus:
“To know the character of a person give him power.”
Women should be given power equal to men to foster a better tomorrow. Reservation is like the highlighted agenda of any political party these days. Women reservation has always been a topic of debate. In 1993 constitutional amendment was passed for a random one third of village council leader or Pradhan positions, in Grama Panchayat to be reserved for women. This enabled women to display their capacities and capabilities. The successful implementation of the constitutional amendment paved the way for women reservation bill that proposes to amend the constitution of India to reserve 33% of all seats in the lower house of parliament. Rajya Sabha passed the bill on March 2010; the Lok Sabha has not yet voted the bill. This a strong evidence to prove the inequality or under reservation; the women is undergoing in the society.
On the brighter side providing reservation to women means to make them equally strong like men. Even though the country is developing in almost all fields, the ratio of women when compared to men is feeble and pathetic. Reservation can promote more and more women to limelight and provide them with a better economic, social, political and personal life. Country is getting advanced in all levels and there is in need for a proportionate rate of effort from the part of the men and women to create a better balance. Women become more confident and secure when they are given power or reservation to cater their problems.
Reservation in a sense is not going to provide women the ease of equality but could arise a feeling of inferiority in women because even if they are granted 33% they are made the marginalized section by denying 50% of rights. Reservation for women will be a positive move from the part of society; which would enable them to unleash and unveil their talent and open before gates of opportunities. Thus she could gather the power of mind to destroy all locks, all gates and all bolts that is set upon her freedom.
Let the words of Brigham Young speak volumes:
“You educate a man: You educate a man
You educate a woman; you educate a generation.”
Women ever since been the creator of anything and everything are deprived of her standards, her confidence, her freedom, her voice, her valour to describe in a word of everything. Now it’s time for a change; a change that must come in the name of reservation which could restore her with freedom, confidence, value, voice, standard and far of them all respect.  It’s hard time for the society to remove their clutches and let her be free; free to do what she wanted; what she longed for and make this world a better place for her too to survive and live.
In the words of D.H.Lawrence:
“A woman has to live her life or live to repent not having lived it.” No women should be left to repent for not having lived her life, each and every one should be made proud that she has lived her life. Reservation for women should be a mission to foster equal rights for men and women which could lead to the vision of a bright future. Reservation should be like the one in which both male and female could proportionately and equally benefit to the welfare and development of the country.

If You Fail to Listen...

Life is a never ending process of listening. It is an in despicable part of one's life. All of us listen. But, what are those, that we listen to? We do listen everything, but that willingness to accept something, that we listen to varies. It varies depending on our current state of mind, circumstances or situations. But, do they cost us at any point of our life?

That again is a question with a very vague answer, because most of the time you keep some others life at stake through your actions. You might be the sole owner of the problem, but the fungi it spreads might deteriorate the future and dreams of your loved ones.

What are the things we should listen to? We can listen to everything, but should we incorporate them in our actions is again a choice left to oneself to decide with. Your life depends upon the decisions you make; you are responsible for each and everything that happens in your life. Actions cannot be taken back but one can regret on his/her deeds; but the holes that it makes cannot be filled again. Each action awaits a decision you take in life; which listens to some voice; the voice of your heart. Listen to the voice of your heart, it never fails you.

But, if you fail to listen to the voice of your heart, the consequences will have no solutions to calm your heart, for the fury it leaves in you. One might feel happy then, at that moment, but, just making way for the never ending sadness which is to follow... like the dawn awaiting the dusk.
One can just turn and look back to the worst time of their life and just murmur with agony, "If had listened."

If Tomorrow never comes...

If tomorrow never comes....This is a thought; which has no static answer, it is always vague...
Everything is vague in this world; right from its creation, its creator, its formation, its existence, let it be anything of these or something else, the incredible world we are in is the mystery yet unresolved. It has a confused state of atmosphere, so is our lives. What are we heading towards?

We are moving on a spell, on either sides, we have the land and the sea, until we fall into the sea, we have life, but once we have fallen, we move towards infinity. Then, there is no looking back or coming back. There is no tomorrow... There is nothing, only never ending silence.

Who creates tomorrow? Who is sure that he/she might witness it? Then, why do we all have tomorrow rather need tomorrow? The only thing one has to himself is today; then, why regret about yesterdays or the never seen tomorrows?

"Yesterday" ends in 'today' and "tomorrow" begins in 'today.' Nothing can be beautiful as today; live it high, lift it high and lead it high, so that you have nothing left for tomorrow.

Think, Thomas Alva Edison posponding his study for the next day; we would have been deceived of the presence of light. Likewise, all eminent personalities made their tomorrow; today. Life is all about the struggle and the pain you are taking or undergoing today, not tomorrow nor yesterday; because that is, 'where you live.'

Plan for tomorrow, but begin it today, with the hope that, somebody, somewhere, in someway, by some means, would fulfill it for you. Thus, you are beginning your tomorrow; today.

Everyone dreams about their soulmate. They have different endless expectations about him/her. But, who is your real soulmate? That is still a big question and the answer is filled with irony. This is a piece in which, I describe my 'Soul Mate.'

You are my favourite companion, always with me, in my good and bad times. I share my pettiest secrets with you. You get a heartbeat with mine. You start your life with me and end in me. You are slightly taller to me. You weep with me. You share my soul. You spread out to show your presence. You follow me patiently with passion. Without you I am dead. You eat with me and grow with me. You walk with me. You helped me cover my tears. You are invisibly, a visible factor in my life.

You make me complete. You never betrayed me and will never do. We are always together. You remained in the dark filling my life with colours. You never asked nor told me anything, but still you spoke volumes. You were undemanding, colourless, ready to face the harder realities of life, giving me all the churning butter, filling yourself with the watery residue.

I, thank you, my dear friend for being there; yesterday, today, tomorrow and till the infinity...
I can't foresee the day of our departure, when you leave my hand and disappear to an unknown land, leaving me all alone to be ashes, that withers away like age. But still, you are with me always, as we perish from our worldly innocence; holding hands, sharing pain, seeking and feeling each one's presence, even, in the concluding moments.

You are my soul, my true friend, whom I trust above me, who represents the Almighty to me and is my true counterpart for the best and the worst of my experience.

You are none other than, 'My Shadow', the best judge, who had witnessed my life better than myself.

Moby Dick- The Narratorial Enigma

Moby Dick: The Narratorial Enigma.
Gayathry.N
Abstract: Moby Dick, The masterpiece that names Melville, The proud author of the work is said to be narrated in first person by Ishmael, the Narrator –Character. Ishmael even after being named as the sole narrator of the work fails at times as the narrator of the work. He largely happens to be like a chameleon narrator. Moby Dick: The narratorial Enigma is the product of my sincere study to find an answer to this dilemma of the narrator.
Every work has a hidden agenda; a puzzle like enigma which is partially or impartially created by its creator; but even the creator is insufficient to realize that puzzle and unlock it. The key always remains a sole property to him; the ultimate creator; who is behind every creation. The creator is dead after the creation; it is then the reader begins…as it is echoed in the words of Roland Barthes: “death of the author and the birth of the reader.” The unravishing storm in the mind of the creator finds its calmness with the birth of his creation; which is awaiting innumerable rebirths.
Herman Melville’s classic tale about the whale, Moby Dick, is the sole work that blessed its creator with the boon of immortality. Centuries after its birth the work is still a puzzle; a puzzle hard and challenging; eating the sleeps of millions always. Each puzzle dies to give a new birth which turns out to be more challenging and harder than the previous ones.  It is a genius of a kind, one of the greatest whale story ever written is truly an encyclopedic source for a newborn whaler.
Melville’s Moby Dick which Richard Chase described, “as the most startling and most characteristic product of the American imagination is a strange and difficult work. Of the nine novels he published in his lifetime Moby Dick stood between his successes and failures. It was since 1919 that it began to be regarded as a masterpiece. It is not only a big book; is also a peculiarly full and rich one, and from the very beginning it conveys a sense of abundance, of high creative power, that exhilarates and enlarges the imagination.
Many characters are named after the Old Testament prophets and kings, these are all stronger but the mightiest of them all, captain Ahab, challenged the nature. The work reflects his passionate learning, personal style and a steady insight into the forgotten connections with the past. The book is rather an experience of the quest rather than the quest for the whale.
Moby Dick is a strange mixture of fantasy and realism based upon the pacific whaling industry, the major commercial activity in the mid nineteenth century America. The narrator who calls himself Ishmael, an outcast wanderer, ships abroad the whaling vessel Pequod in New Bedford. The work is the journey of the sane officers dominated completely by their insane captain’s obsessed determination to pursue, one particular whale that had previously destroyed the captains boat and left him mutilated in body with an artificial leg.
The book is named after the whale, Moby Dick. Melville elevated a local custom which otherwise was likely to be lost by attributing it with a shield like fictive element of the quest for the leviathan.  It is a revenge tale about the revengeful quest of a wounded man for the powerful force of nature; Moby Dick; and the perishing memories of the questors and the wounded questor into the deep perils of the sea, who engulfs all; leaving one as the sole survivor and witness to unveil and unfold the awful revenge tragedy of stubbornness that outlived the American imagination.
“Call me Ishmael”, the novel opens with this statement. The beginning statement of the work leads the reader to the sole survivor; spared to accomplish the task of narration; Ishmael, the narrator of the work. The novel unleashes not just a tale of quest instead the reality of such a quest, the life and energy behind the quest. Every description opens a clear picture of the incident described. Now the question is, was Ishmael sufficient for the job? Can we crown him as the sole narrator of the work or is it a narratorial enigma?
The act or process of telling the particulars of the story is referred to as narration. It is the fiction writing mode whereby the narrator communicates directly with the reader. Ishmael is the so called narrator of Moby Dick, who is the speaker or voice of the narrative discourse. He is the single voice or rather the single mind from whose pool of thoughts the whole story is unfolded.
Melville maintained the first person narratorial voice in the early chapters, in which we get a picture of Ishmael, his meeting and acquaintance with queequeg; all these deals with Ishmael’s life, queequeg’s and his adventures which finds a mark when he boards the ship, but after boarding the ship the narration changes and the narrative focuses more on the cetological details than the plot. Ishmael the narrator and character fails to remain constant, he is seen disappearing without reasons. Ishmael constantly failed to protect his role as the first person narrator of the book. Even though he resumes the thread of narration he largely becomes a silent figure.
Melville, through Moby Dick has given to the world an encyclopedia on whaling. He has stored such minute details of whaling and has coronated the profession. Almost half of the book details the profession of whaling, the life of whalers, description of the sea, information on killing a whale, extraction of whale oil and in a word, all about whaling. These chapters marginalize the first person narrator to a kind of peripheral narrator employed to do the narration. These chapters in fact could have been narrated by Melville himself. The major reason for not considering Ishmael as the narrator of these chapters is his inefficiency in the profession of whaling and the over powering efficiency and experience of Melville.
Melville after the death of his father at the age of twelve was forced to maintain himself. He worked as a bank clerk, a salesman, a farmhand, a schoolteacher, but in none of these jobs was he able to earn more than a bare maintenance for himself. In June 1839 he took the momentous step of going to the sea. He was attracted by the idea of sea faring life. He stepped the St.Lawrence, a combined cargo and passenger vessel to Liverpool. Later he shipped abroad the whaler Acushnet from New Bedford as a member of the crew, bound to the Pacific Ocean and remained at sea for few years. He had inured the perils and rigors of whale hunt, had also lived for a period among the savage people. Melville thus having a firsthand experience to the reality of whaling narrated these chapters with such brevity and clarity laying before the reader a clear picture of the whaling industry. Ishmael even being a scholar would fail to explain these chapters in such detail because of his lack of experience. Ishmael is marginalized in these chapters, where Melville employed a first person peripheral narrator who can be Melville himself to detail on whaling.
The next narratorial enigma arises in those chapters in the form of soliloquies, descriptions and conversations, where the author employed the omniscient narrator. Each character is described in detail, all about their internal characters and external appearances. Narrator gives a detailed description of the mates, especially Starbuck, Stubb, Ahab and Flask. Ishmael seeing these characters for the first is insufficient enough to describe them. Then chapters in the form of conversations between characters, like Stubb describing about his dream to Flask, conversation between Ahab and carpenter, Ahab’s conversation with the captains of other ships. These conversations are explained in such detail like the narrator have heard and seen them. Ishmael cannot come around on all these occasions and overhear them. Here too Melville has employed the omniscient narrator who is outside the text.
The author has employed devices like soliloquies to bring the deeper thoughts and reactions of the characters. A first person narrator would fail to read the inner thoughts of the characters. Only a person outside the text could narrate these chapters in detail. Towards the end chapters describing the chase for Moby Dick is explained in complete detail. Ishmael being part of the operation would fail to explain those chapters in that detail, only a person who is outside the action could explain the whole action.
Melville thus employed a third person omniscient narrator in the chapters. Switching to a third person narrator allows Melville to show the reader such moments which transpire outside the narrator’s point of view but which are still interesting to the reader and help in deciphering the other characters in the story. Melville needs a third person omniscient narrator as the character grows larger and the story more complex, who could get into the thread of narrative anytime.

Melville has employed an eye of god narration in the work where the speaker or writer assumes like he has god like knowledge. Melville has presented before his readers this narratorial enigma. Ishmael is like a mouth piece employed by Melville to complete the tale and probably to add to its realistic nature. Ishmael thus can be named as the marginalized narrator of the work. Melville has created a profound and philosophically complicated tale set in a world of largely uneducated working class men. One can only assume Melville to be the omniscient narrator and the peripheral narrator; but is it really Melville himself is still an enigma and the narratorial enigma continues…Moby Dick with all its complexities and varied natures, still remains to occupy one of the greatest place in world literature.
What Peace means to me…
How beautiful it is to be alive! But is there a purpose in being alive in the midst of chaos, confusions and disturbance; when your mind is like a roaring sea; no; definitely not; because even with all its beauty, life is like an empty vessel without peace.
Peace,
“It doesn’t mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.”
Peace is a state of mind. A beautifully bloomed flower, chirping of the birds, a calm blue lake. The presence of our dear and near ones, a cheerful person can all make one’s mind overflow with joy. This happiness or joy is the foundation of peace. Peace is born from happiness. If a person is happy, he is in peace.
Peace cannot be withheld; it can only be felt within one’s mind. It is like the waves of the ocean, which comes rushing to hug the land; like a small child, who rushes to his mother. Peace comes from little moments which make your mind dance in delight. A small prayer can lead you to peace, a calm atmosphere, a good friend, a lively hope; all these can provide you peace of mind.
Mind is like a gyre, which turns and turns for no reasons. It is a sea of emotions. Emotions are like ants, once they are set free, all comes together. Happiness and sadness are the two sides of the same coin. One cannot be always happy; likewise, one cannot be always sad. World is a whirlpool and we are inside the whirlpool. Sometimes we are safe, but sometimes we are being caught inside the whirlpool. And with all these troubles surrounding us, where is the time to be happy. Without happiness, peace is invisible. Peace is a mystery, which can be solved through happiness.
How can we attain peace in this chaotic world?  “When the power of love overcomes the love of power; the world will know peace.”
Peace is a combined effort. Unity would lead to success, which fills our mind with happiness, which ultimately opens the door for peace. Peace comes from within. Each person should work for his peace; by doing one’s duty with sincerity, by thanking and remembering god for everything and anything, by being good to one and others.
“Forgive…. Not because they deserve forgiveness; but because you deserve peace.”
All these will lead us to god, the ultimate creator and destroyer and he will purify our souls and will bestow peace to each of us; because understanding and knowing god is the ultimate goal of one’s life; and with god’s arms behind you, even the bigger stones and hurdles cannot stop you from attaining the peace you want, because “God is Peace.”
